What is PAT Testing?

PAT Testing is a process that can identify faults in electrical items that could potentially cause harm. Most cars are tested every year to ensure they are safe to drive and don’t have any faults. Similarly, PAT Testing is a series of inspections and tests on electrical items that get plug in and use quite often on a daily basis. Just like you would not want the brakes to fail in a car you are driving and cause an accident, you would not want, for example, to plug in an iron, pick it up and get an electric shock or worse.

  • Health and Safety at Work (etc) Act 1974
  • Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
  • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 2003
  • Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998

Inspection and testing is carried out in accordance with the above legislation, and in accordance with the guidance laid down by the Institution of Electrical Engineers in their Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment.

PAT Testing Procedure

PAT Testing involves a series of inspections and various electrical tests depending upon the Classification of the appliance. The appliance does need to be turned off and disconnected for the testing to be done but their procedure will cause minimal disruption. If testing at a business during operating hours only one single workstation gets tested at a time.

Testing can also take place outside of working hours or at a weekend in order to minimise disruption

Testing is carried out using only qualified personnel and equipment that is calibrated and certified annually so you can be assured of a professional service.

Each item that is tested will get a PAT test label to indicate a pass or fail. A summary report detailing all the tested appliances will also be produced which can be sent to your insurance company should they need it.
