Edging towards success

How Jennifer Sanders became Hull’s carpet queen

Beginning her career in textiles in 2014 and having a BA in Design, Jennifer Sanders has always been a “dab hand” with a sewing machine. Then, in 2020, after she became a mum of two, Jen decided to branch off from her husband’s flooring company to set up her own business of bespoke and tailor-made stair runners and rugs. Having the industry background and knowing of the high demand for the type of work she provides, as well as needing the flexibility of being your own boss to look after her two children, Sanders Edging was established.

“With my husband being in the trade we always knew the market was there. Then when our children came along, it seemed like the perfect time to turn our dreams into reality.”

Needing the perfect workshop space was a must for Sanders Edging in order to create a bespoke experience for her clients. “The modern entrance of the Louis Pearlman Centre and warm greetings from the staff instils an air of professionalism to all my clients.”

Being the only company in Hull that offers tape binding, Jen has faced many obstacles. Sanders Edging holds trade accounts with local and national carpet manufacturers. However, not all manufacturers allowed Sanders Edging to open an account with them. This was because she does not have a shop front. “A shop front was never in my business plan. I run on an appointment only basis to ensure I create and uphold a personal, bespoke experience for my clients and LPC fits my requirements for that perfectly.” Wanting to stay true to her businesses plan, Jen did not let this obstacle hold her back. Instead, she continued to work closely with the local manufactures and grew her impressive portfolio. Then, shortly after went on to create relationships with highly renowned and high-end carpet manufacturers such as Westex, Fibre and Manx Tomkinson, to name a few.

In the future Sanders Edging hopes to have reached out to more trade around the UK, as well as collaborating with more interior designers to build on her ever-growing portfolio of work. “I hope to expand into a larger unit within LPC in the near future. The advertisement and promotion they offer to businesses within the centre is crucial to me. As well as the large loading bay where all my stock can be delivered. LPC really has helped my business thrive in the short time I have been here.”
